We Are Going To Need A Bigger Tent! ~ Adelaide Fringe 2020 Review

The Moa at Gluttony, Sun 22 Feb.

The opening night of The History Of House is completely sold out. The dance area down front is quickly chockers and the bleachers soon fill to the brim. People of all ages are here and ready to dance, and dance they do. Adelaide’s own House legend Groove Terminator (Simon LeWicki) has been doing some amazing event gigs in recent years such as Djing with a full orchestra with guest vocalists for Ministry Of Sound and last year’s House 5 with the Adelaide Gospel Collective. This year he has joined forces with the legendary Soweto Gospel Choir for his most party-tastic set to date.

The air of expectation is electric and when the lights go down the roar from the crowd is spine-tingling. The 16-member SGC are all in white t-shirts and black pants and GT is out front with in white jacket and pants. Right from the very start the place is jumping, each new track met with a rush of acknowledgement and love. Seamlessly mixing classic house grooves with the mighty vocal power of the choir, the vibe is euphoric.

While is it is mainly rave anthems, there is actually about four shows going on at the same time. There is an African Gospel Choir, a history of ‘80s and ‘90s House, there is a fantastic ‘70s disco bracket and a bunch of crowd pleasing ‘80s pop. So it’s a bit like being at a ‘90s rave, Hot Dub Time Machine, Studio 54 and an eighties retro night all in one. The gems keep coming and you can’t stop dancing.

So many incredible moments like New Order’s Blue Monday merging into You Spin My Round by Dead or Alive or The Specials Free Nelson Mandela sliding into Everybody’s Free by Rozella, the hairs on your neck rise. All the while the SGC are dancing, shaking their butts, getting people out of the audience to dance on stage and high-fiving people. They are having as much fun as we are. People danced everywhere but this is a thing that is bigger than this tent, I’d love to see it in a bigger and more dance friendly space.

If you love to dance, this joyous, explosive and dance-tastic show is a 100% must see this fringe.
